There are a wide variety of pines but there are three main categories that are used for unstained pine furniture: white, yellow and Radiata.
White pine generally ranges in color from a light, almost white to a pale yellow. It is the softest of these three categories of pines, lightweight but strong. Even though it is considered a soft wood yellow pine is harder than its white pine cousin; it’s considered a hard pine. It’s grain is made up of a distinctive light and dark pattern.
Radiata pine is plantation-grown to produce a harder pine that is more dense and resinous, making it a more durable variety. It is a pale cream in color with a distinctive grain pattern somewhat like that of ash or oak and practically knot-free.

Pine takes a stain well, although for best results you may want to apply a sealer to prepare the wood and achieve more of an even look. If you like the natural look of this wood you may prefer to leave it in its natural state, or maybe just complete it with a clear, protective finish.
Unfinished pine furniture provides a great, economical way to furnish your home with solid wood at a price that won’t break the bank. While it isn’t quite as durable as unfinished oak furniture, it also isn’t as expensive. You can still expect unfinished pine furniture to last for a long time with a little care.
